Sword Art Online II "GGO" Review

FULL EPISODE SPOILERS

Alrighty, Kirito is now in GGO and it's time to get ready for the Bullet of Bullets! Why it isn't called "Battle of Bullets" I will never understand but hey...show's still cool.

This episode, much like how the first episode of the season caught us up to what's going down in the lives of our heroes catches us up on the know-how for GGO. We get some new mechanics explained to us, a few rules, and get ready to register for the BoB.

Also, a gender swap. Whaaaaaat.

It's a really fun episode that sort of puts us in Kirito's shoes as he wanders through GGO trying to see what all the hype is as well as get a feel for the game before fully diving into his investigation for Death Gun. Solid detective work on his part. Immerse yourself in the environment and get adjusted to it before Death Gun can surprise you by knowing everything there really is to know. If he really is as lethal as his name states then being as prepared as possible would prove extremely vital.

The interaction of Kirito and Sinon, as predicted, is also a joy to watch. For once, it seems that Kirito is the more excitable one and Sinon is laid back. Then again, I suppose it can be expected. All those times Kirito was helping someone, he was more experienced in the game because he was either a Beta tester or someone who'd just played the game for a longer time. Sinon has played this game for a very long time and has immersed herself fully into it to help heal her PTSD and anxiety.

Coming off of such a powerful episode for Sinon, it's good to see her expressing herself and getting into the spirit of being a mentor. She laughs, smiles, and feels genuine emotions when around Kirito while helping him learn the game. It feels relieving to see her do all these things, it makes her human and not some case study for the season.

The episode begins with Kirito landing in GGO and finding how that his converted avatar is actually a girl. Not sure why he's a girl but he is so we'll just have to role with it. I mean, he still looks like Kirito, but, with longer hair and purple eyes instead of the normal black ones. Kirito tries to find someone to help him out, but everyone there is apparently a guy and apparently just wants to hit on him/ her, so he avoids them. We also get a better feel for the main city in GGO, not given a name I believe, in that it is a typical cyberpunk futuristic city without as many robots. It also has a dirtier feel to it, which Kirito points out. Though, compared to ALO where it's all about magic and green stuff...yeah, the difference is going to be rather noticeable.

Finally, he comes across a kind person: Sinon, in more civilian type clothing than her normal (rather revealing) battle clothing. She agrees to help Kirito, who puts on a more feminine act to try and win over Sinon rather than coming out and just saying he is a guy and avoiding any potential trouble the two may come across later on in the season. Oh...wait.

Sinon takes him to a "market" where Kirito learns about various guns and I have no idea what Sinon is talking about because I don't know much about guns so I'm just going along with Kirito. Thankfully, none of it is super vital to the overall plot of the episode, it just adds character to Sinon to see her happily and excitedly talk about all of this. We get to see her feel passionate about the game, and it goes to show why she's one of the better players.

They come across a little gambling area and see a game where an NPC shoots at a player as they try to run up and touch it, winning all of the money all the other players have previously put in. Here we learn about prediction lines, which is basically a player's way of telling what path the bullet is going to travel from the gun. After someone tries and fails, Kirito steps up and manages to complete the mission, earning a crap ton of money to pay for gear and weapons in the process. It simply reminds us that Kirito is the fastest player in all of video-gaming, I suppose.

They return to buy some weapons and Kirito decides not to buy a gun as his main weapon, and instead buys a purple Photon Sword, which is basically a light-saber. No, seriously. It makes the same noises and looks just like a light-saber. So...heck yeah, that's awesome! He also buys a handgun just so he can have a ranged weapon. The two go to target practice where Sinon instills her relaxed teaching methods upon Kirito, telling him that the accuracy of a gun depends on how calm the player is. Makes sense. Sinon is a sniper so she always has to be calm, which is why she carries such a nonchalant demeanor about her. 'Tis an "ah-ha!" moment, indeed.

Our episode comes to a close as they realize that they are going to be late for registration for BoB and Kirito hops on a motorbike to get them there in time, while Sinon actually laughs and smiles and it's nice and yay.

Anyway, this is a fun episode. Kirito and Sinon work very well together and you really pull for them to help each other out. No, it doesn't technically further the investigation into Death Gun, but it was a step in the right direction for Kirito to prepare for it as well as learn more about the game. The advancement of Sinon's character is great and I look forward to her continuing to grow and becoming a main part of the show.

Next time, there's conflict in the room as Kirito learns something very unexpected. See you then!
